Role Model

Growing up, we all had that one person that we said we wanted to be like when we grew up. Whether it was our favorite singer, actor, teacher, sibling or parent. However, I don’t think we really understood the depths of that statement. Since I’ve gotten older and people have started to look to me as a role model, I’ve realized that it’s an honor but it also comes with a lot of pressure. At times, I feel like 2Pac- all eyes on me. As my Bishop says, “You never know what a person has gone through to get to where they are.” I can understand the other side of that too because for those that do know what you have gone through, they admire your strength and your drive to keep pushing. Sometimes we run from titles because of the responsibility that is attached to the title. One title that none of us can run from is that of a role model. A role model is a person looked to by others to model after their characteristics, values, and the way the person presents themselves. There is always someone watching. If you are reading this and you’re thinking that you aren’t a role model for someone, I have to tell you that you are. We are all role models to somebody, whether it be our siblings, friends, or co-workers. That’s why it is important to be open, honest, and transparent with everyone we come in contact with, in person or via social media. Be you and let your light shine. There is no need to dim your light. The Bible tells us in Matthew 5:14 ERV, “You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden.” Let your light shine so you can ignite someone else’s. Love, Eboni P.
